The editorial cartoon in the Feb. 13 issue of The Panther was clever, although "night terrors" is certainly not a common reason why students come for counseling. I hope that students don't get the impression that we slam doors, literally or figuratively, on students at any number of sessions. How long we see a student is far more complicated than counting numbers. We really do have both compassion and ethics.
More importantly, the statement that Student Psychological Counseling Services "isn't working towards additional accommodations for students" is patently untrue. It is a constant concern and an issue that we discuss with the administration on an ongoing basis every semester.
The process for hiring more counselors and obtaining more space is quite complex.  Making sure your facts are correct would be really helpful in making your point, which is that all students want the health and safety of students to be a priority, as do we. So do Chancellor Daniele Struppa and Chief Operating Officer Harold Hewitt, as they have made strong efforts to add additional staff to help with the increased student load.
Even with the blatant inaccuracies of your editorial and a few in the main article, it is reassuring that students care about each other enough to speak out and even draw a cartoon. The students who we help report very high satisfaction with our services. Perhaps next time, the message of any article or cartoon is about what we do well, rather than what we can't do.
