Senior Charlie Piro prepares for another foul pitch from Claremont at the top of the fifth inning in Tuesday's game.

Despite junior pitcher Travis McGee leading the Panthers through six innings of no-hit baseball, Chapman fell 3-1 to the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Stags (2-4) at home Tuesday. The loss was a result of C-M-S sophomore Brett Watanabe doing it all and a lack of punch from the Panther offense.
Tuesday marked the Panthers' first home loss this season, dropping their record to 4-2. The team's also lost at Whittier College Feb. 4.
"We got an outstanding pitching performance from [McGee]," said Head Coach Tom Tereschuk. "We just did not get anything going offensively."
McGee faced 27 batters and struck out six, giving up only two hits and one run in eight innings pitched.
"It's the best my arm has felt in a while," McGee said. "Got a no-hitter through six, but we didn't win and that's the biggest part."
McGee contributed more than pitching, being responsible for multiple fielding outs including a failed bunt attempt that led to McGee turning a double play.
Offensively, Chapman struggled, managing only one run on four hits. The Stags' starting pitcher and designated hitter, Watanabe, and his reliever, sophomore Michael Erb, finished with three strikeouts apiece.
"We allowed Claremont to stay in the game," Tereschuk said. "Allowed them to be in a situation where anything could happen there late in the game."
The Stags failed to put up points until the eighth inning when a wild pitch brought in Watanabe on an unearned run, knotting the score up at 1-1.
The Panthers began to self-destruct in the ninth inning.
A fielder's choice got the Stags in position to score and a throwing error by sophomore shortstop Troy Newman resulted in a failed double play.
Watanabe then put the Stags ahead by bringing in two more unearned runs with a double to left field.
"It's a big situation," said sophomore catcher Charlie James regarding the botched double play. "But you have to bounce back after that. You can't put it on one player. You can't put it on one pitch."
Chapman plays away at Cal State San Marcos (6-1) today and will host University of British Columbia (2-2) Feb. 23.
