The game was decided by penalty kicks after two scoreless sudden death overtime rounds.The Panthers scored the first goal in the game’s first half. The score remained 1-0 until Santa Cruz scored in the second. At the end of the 90-minute game, Chapman and Santa Cruz were tied 1-1.The game was sent into an initial sudden death overtime round, but after neither team was able to score in the allotted 10 minutes, a second sudden death round was declared.Neither team was able to score during the second overtime round either. The referee then declared that the game would be decided by penalty kicks.Santa Cruz managed to put three of their penalty kicks into the Panthers’ goal. Chapman, however, emerged victorious after sucessfully putting four in the net.The names of key players and game statistics were unavailable at press time.Last year Chapman was eliminated from the playoffs by University of Redlands, after a scoreless face off was decided by a penalty kick shootout.The Panthers now advance to the Sweet Sixteen playoff tournament. This marks the team’s fourth consecutive NCAA playoff bid. Chapman next challenges University of Puget Sound Sunday at Santa Cruz at 1 p.m. The outcome deemed if they would advance to the Elite Eight regional championships next week. Results of the Puget Sound game were unavailable at press time.
