Whittier out-duels Chapman

The Chapman men’s golf team took on Whittier in a dual match Monday at the California Country Club, with senior Kent Paisley and sophomore Kyle John splitting third place overall honors with scores of six-over 78.

“We have pretty good talent across the board,” Paisley said. “It’s just figuring out how to stay in it for a full 18 holes and battle to the end. Our team has to find a way to become better mental golfers.”

Whittier juniors Justin Bennett and Gevork Atoyan claimed first and second place on the day, respectively, while Paisley and John tied overall for third. Senior Giovanni Chiappano tied for seventh place for the Panthers with a score of 8-over-80, while junior Angel Casan nabbed tenth with an 83.

“The difference between the best golfers and our team is that our team has large blow up holes, and the best golfers can limit damage to give the team a solid number,” Paisley said. “We compound mistakes, and that is where we get in trouble, score-wise.”

With the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Championships this coming Sunday, the dual match against Whittier was used as a final tune-up for the six Panthers who will represent Chapman at the championships at Oak Valley Golf Club in Whittier. Sophomore Brian Wise, junior Nickolas Gates, sophomore Chuck Pedone, Chiappano, John and Paisley make up the six golfers who will be competing for the Panthers.

“We are chomping at the bit,” Paisley said. “We haven’t played well this year as a team at either SCIAC event, and want to remind the top teams that next year the squad will be a force to be reckoned with.”

The fifth-ranked Panthers will be in action at the conference championships starting Sunday at Oak Valley Golf Club in Whittier.
